Dear Sir/Madam
My
name is Wacław Sałaban and I am an author of MORSKOŚCI!! (https://www.morskosci.pl/), a popular science blog
devoted primarily to aspects of marine transport of LNG. Together with Piotr
Kosz, a co-author of the content, since December of 2015 we closely watch –
using openly available data, such as VesselFinder or MarineTraffic –
consecutive LNG deliveries arriving at the regasification terminal in Port of
Świnoujście, Poland. Obviously, among these deliveries, there are numerous ones
from QatarEnergy, using only Q-Flex-class LNG tankers belonging to Nakilat –
under two Delivery-Ex-Ship (DES) long-term contracts – the first one starting
in mid-2014 and the second since the beginning of 2018.
Date of sending the 150th LNG shipment from
Ras Laffan to Świnoujście is coming near. Furthermore, 30th June 2024 marked
the tenth anniversary of the beginning of realization of the first contract
between then-QatarGas and Polish gas supply company, PGNiG – and it also marked
the halfway point of this contract. In our opinion, these three events are
significant milestones in Qatar-Poland LNG trade, and are opportunities for the
promotion of QatarEnergy.
We
came up with an idea we would like to share with you. Delivering the 150th
cargo to Poland is a unique occasion to make an exception – precisely, to use
Moss-type Q-Fleet LNG carrier for this delivery, instead of routinely used
Q-Flex-class LNG carriers. In our opinion, using a tanker belonging to Q-Fleet
class this time, might be reputationally advantageous for QatarEnergy and
Nakilat in many ways.
Firstly,
we have noticed that „debuts” of LNG carriers in regasification terminals draw
more attention from the media – both international professional, and mainstream
on a national level – than recurring arrivals of the same tankers. This
phenomenon applies not only to Poland but also worldwide. In this case, the
arrival of Q-Fleet LNG carrier in Świnoujście will be exceptionally noteworthy
– tankers belonging to this class have never sailed so far to the North.
Currently, the northernmost regasification terminal to which Q-Fleet tankers
have arrived, is Zeebrugge in Belgium. Arrival in Świnoujście would make a new
northern boundary of Q-Fleet-class operations – we are convinced that this
event could catch the attention of professional maritime and LNG industry
media.
The „debut” of the Q-Fleet class tanker could help
draw attention to the round number of cargoes delivered by QatarEnergy (earlier
during the duration of contract – QatarGas). The large number of deliveries
from Qatar to Poland, the period over which they were carried out and their
seamless character are all noteworthy. We think that they are unquestionable
proof of the excellent reliability of QatarEnergy as a LNG supplier, especially
given the current volatile international situation.
Secondly,
the route from Ras Laffan to Świnoujście is among the longest and most
challenging routes used regularly by Nakilat’s vessels. Navigating this route
with a Q-Fleet-class LNG carrier can be even more challenging than by
Q-Flex class ships, but if done, it could serve as a good proof of Nakilat’s
expertise, the strength and reliability of the Q-Fleet class (despite its age),
and the high qualifications and experience of the crews on tankers.
We
hope that our idea could help international promotion and building of a solid
reputation for QatarEnergy and Nakilat as LNG partners worldwide and will be of
interest to you.
To
highlight the significance of the contracts with QatarEnergy and to signal
passing the halfway point of their duration, an article with analysis has been
posted on the MORSKOŚCI!! blog on 30th June 2024 (https://www.morskosci.pl/2024/06/realizacja-kontraktow-katarskich.html).
We would be most grateful for your reply.
Yours faithfully,
Wacław Sałaban
Piotr Kosz
